Chrisaliel listened with interest, nodding her understanding as Master Titus spoke of their destinations and their cargo. She made no attempt to mask her interest as he spoke of their second destination. It was a goal of hers to one day visit the Citadel and this voyage would take them there, but would she have accomplished her assignment in Taquar in time to continue with them? There really was no way to know for certain, but the temptation of the Citadel was such that she would do her utmost to be on that second stage of the journey.

The news that Lady Prima would be accompanying them took the Adhiel maiden by surprise. Upon reflection though, she could see that it was not something that the lady would wish to miss, unless she was truly set against travel. In a way, it was comforting to know that such an important personage would be joining them, as it suggested a great deal of confidence in the safety of this remarkable new device.

The biggest surprise, however, was their imminent departure time; only two marks! Chrisaliel looked upward with the others, but her mind was still upon that departure time. She nodded and smiled encouragingly at the young lady as she left for her interview, but she could not keep herself from wondering if there was some way to get word to Shadinow to let him know where she was going.

What if he comes back and has no idea where I’ve gone? she thought with a flicker’s panic fluttering in her breast. Every enquiry had resulted in the same thing; there was no way to contact him. His letter was a final good bye, with no room for a future between them. No, she told herself as firmly as she could manage. If we ever meet again, it will be by accident or the will of the Mother.

The wellspring of grief once again threatened to drown her and she turned away from the others briefly as her eyes filled with tears. Chris took a rather generous drink of her wine, fighting down the grief and refusing to shed the tears. Then she swallowed hard and turned back to Masters Titus and Tristam.

“How long is the voyage expected to take?” she enquired of the two, bravely attempting to smile pleasantly.

"Who knows?" responded Titus at once, his eyes watching the withdrawing Cassandra as she followed Alphonse to the office upstairs. "We've never done anything like this before. The Captain of the vessel assures me that it might happen quickly...a day or two to Taquar, and perhaps several to the Citadel...a shockingly fast speed, faster than I had ever imagined. It's the voyage home from the Citadel that might take some time for, you see, the Captain mentioned currents of air, and how they'll work for us on the way out and against us on the way back. Good luck, my dear..."

This last directed to Cassandra, whom Alphonse lead to the stairs immediately. Rising up, he moved with the awkward stiffness of a man refusing to admit his advanced yahren, an older man unwilling to allow a more youthful applicant to usurp his heightened position among the staff. He lead her along the terrace overlooking the foyer...below she could see the eyes of her prior companions watching her long walk along the terrace...before her escort stopped before one of the many finely-carved doors along the northern wall. "Here you are, miss. Luck," offered Alphonse, giving her a nod of confidence before he opened the door to allow her in.

(OOC: Cassandra, please post to the "Prima's Office" thread I opened for you separately!)

"Maybe we'll be taking her with us," mentioned Titus, his eyes turning back to his companions. "She's here for the secretarial position. May she find some luck with it. As for runners, my boy, no worries at all. You could transcribe or write a letter, if you wish, and Giovanne would deliver it himself...he does so very swiftly indeed, for he is one of the precious few that might keep his horse within the city. Let me send for a writing box, that you might do this. ALPH....oh dear. I beg your pardon for a moment...let me...oh, here he is now. Alphonse! Can you fetch us a writing box, that master Tristam might draft a few letters before his departure?" barked the trade master, his words carrying up to the upper level and the aged servant who, after letting Cassandra into the office, had withdrawn to listen furtively to the conversation within with one ear directly upon the door itself. Startled by Titus' bellowing words, Alphonse lept into action, moving to fetch the requested item.

"Only a day to Taquar?" Tristam repeated with his mouth hanging half open. Tristam shook his head to clear it. "I always knew they were fast but that's incredible! If I didn't know better I'd say you were joking." Tristam smiled at Titus.

The master trader lifted his large shoulders...he truly was a large man in every way...in an exaggerated shrug. "I don't want to bring back luck, but our captain...Captain Adriano Constantin...says we could do as well. Perhaps you both would like to meet the Captain, mada, while Tristam drafts his letter? I think the Captain is going over the supply wagons outside. If we wish it, we might catch him," finished Titus, giving Chris a questioning look.

The writing case arrived for Tristam. It was a heavily-lacquered case with a hinged top that contained ink, sand, blotter, several quills and a pen knife along with a healthy stack of bleached parchment. Alphonse handed this over with a quick bow, clearly bent by the need to hurry back to the study door such that he might continue to listen in upon the two women, his decorum only just losing out from his curiousity.

“I would, I thank you, Master Titus,” replied Chrisaliel, feeling quite curious about their Captain, not to mention the airship. The Adhiel lass finished her drink and placed the empty glass on a nearby surface. “Please, lead on, sir,” she said, smiling softly.

She had not yet considered the actual flight, but their immanent departure was now making her increasingly nervous. Chris had taken to sea travel reasonably well, but flying through the air was rather a different thing.

“Have you flown in the airship yet, Master Titus?” she enquired, attempting to keep her tone level.

Tristam accepted the writing case with a nod of thanks and chuckled as Alphonse scurried off back to his door. He gave Master Titus and Madam Mithroldyn a wave as they left and then focused on how to put all this to his parents. Tristam busied himself a moment with sharpening his quill and arrangling the ink in the case but really there was no need for deliberation. The direct approach was the only way to go.

Dear Mum and Dad,

I got a job! And what a job it is! Mum, I'm a merhcant's clerk! Dad I'm a merchant's minder! And both for the Constanza family! And I haven't been at that Pan's Isle stuff again either its true!

I met this Master Titus in the Desert Jewel and its just all moved so fast. All those airship rumors are true! I'm going to fly, Mum and Dad! Can you believe it? I know I can't. We're leaving today for far off lands seeking trade and adventure. I'm not sure when I'll be back. They tell me all sorts of incredible speeds this thing can travel. Still give me a month before you start fearing for me

I love you both so much. Don't worry, I'll do you both proud.

Tristam

Tristam shook the sand over his letter and blotted it dry. Reading it over it didn't sound like enough but it would have to do. He rolled it up and tied with a spare strip of cloth he had from his mother's leaving. Then Tristam headed out into the courtyard looking for Giovanne.

The Courtyard

Titus was the epitome of decorum, and as such he waited patiently to take up Chris' arm and escort her outside. Just beyond the door and to the left, the contingent of guards were collected around their officer as he addressed them, each kneeling or sitting upon the lush lawns of the estate as they received their final words before the coming adventure. The excitement they felt was apparent upon their faces, young and old alike, and even the gate guards...the hulking brute and the shapely flirt...listened on with almost indecent jealousy, for they apparently would not be going.

To the right were the wagons, though they had already begun to depart. Only four were left within the walls, and it was here that Giovanne and the Captain discussed the remaining cargo, pointing at the wagons with a critical eye. The Captain was a lean, fit man that wore a black coat decorated with silver trim, a uniform that would fit no organization at all, for he held no official position. His black hair was long and tied back in a club, and it hid under the brim of a scraper that reached from one side to another to leave his blazing epaulettes in it's shadow. Turning, he considered the newcomers only a moment before lifting his scraper from his head and presenting them a stiff bow.

"Captain Constantin, may I present Madam Mithroldyn? She will be accompanying us on our voyage. I should be pleased to introduce Master Tristam as soon as he arrives as well...he'll be my clerk. Madam Mithroldyn, Captain Constantin, recently of the Condotierre..."

"A pleasure, madam," offered the Captain, his crisp movements and military demeanor conflicting with his affable, buoyant face and his warm, brown eyes. "So you've come to share the skies with us? It will be a historic event, I think. We're almost ready to depart. Have you travelled afar before, madam?" he finished, the question an obvious one but presented as an opportunity for the elfess to present herself as she wished.

Once Tristam had completed his letter, he left the writing case in Alphonse' capable hands and left to join them. Giovanne was with the others already, and as soon as he spotted Tristam and the parchment he held, the horseman excused himself and moved away. "Another letter for home, is it?" he asked, nodding towards the missive. "I should be pleased to take it, though you won't have the time to receive a response, I'm afraid to say. Time has run short, and my parcel bag has grown rather healthy, haha!"

Escorted by Master Titus, Chrisaliel again looked about the bustling courtyard. It did indeed appear that they would be ready to depart very soon. The Adhiel felt butterflies begin to flutter about within her stomach and hoped that she would tolerate air travel as well as she did sea.

At Master Titus’ introduction, Chris offered her hand to the Captain with a pleasant smile upon her lips.

“How do you do, Captain,” she replied to his greeting. “I have, yes.”

She laughed softly at the Captain’s question of her travels and answered, “I have sailed from Kislovan, my home, to Kings Court, Captain. And then I came to World’s Mouth. So, I have traveled a great distance but not extensively,” she concluded, with a little of her accustomed good humour. Chris was determined not to let thoughts of Shadinow invade her every waking moment and so she did not allow herself to think beyond her arrival in the city in that brief reminiscence.

“I welcome the opportunity to travel, and this will indeed be an historic journey,” she agreed, reverting to his previous observation. “Is it similar to sea travel by ship?” the Adhiel maiden asked hopefully, feeling her butterflies multiply of their own accord.

"Oh quite understood." Tristam nodded to Giovanne as he handed him the letter. "To be honest its probably best I'm not around for the reply. They'd likely try to talk me out of it." Tristam chuckled. "Thanks again."

With that, Tristam walked back over to the group with the Captain, Titus and Chrisaliel. He approached such that Titus should clearly see him and wiated politely for him to answer the question put to him and for his introduction.

Tristam approached in time to see the Captain smile at Chrisaliel's question, the sharp look of a craftsman appreciating his trade clear in his eye. Nodding at the newcomer, he lifted his hands in a quick apology. "I beg pardon if I seem wordy, but your question is a good one, and I do so love to speak of it. They are not similar at all, in fact, though most do not understand the particulars of this very vast difference. Perhaps I might begin by explaining the methods of sailing a naval vessel, and then to follow this with how an airship differs?"

"You see, a naval vessel has a cutwater. This is the critical difference that most fail to understand. That cutwater gives a naval vessel to operate best when the wind strikes it from the side, or more specifically, the quarter, which lies between the side and the stern of the vessel. The wind strikes all of it's sails, which are angled to direct the wind such that it pushes the ship forward, giving it what we might call steerage or headway. The ship can utilize the wind effectively for steerage even when it backs closer to the fore...even when it blows from a point further forward than the side of the ship. In fact, it's in this way a naval vessel sails upwind: it sails as close to the eye of the wind as it can, a process known as reaching. Perhaps you've seen this, for ships often reach from one side to the other by either turning through the eye of the wind...a process known as tacking...or by falling away and coming 'round to the other side, a process known as wearing. But despite all of this, the ship continues to move forward due to it's cutwater, which is the sharp angle of it's hull as it moves through the water. While it does give a little distance towards the wind...this is known as leeway...it generally continues it's orderly progression straight forward so long as it has headway. You will also note that a ship never sails directly with the wind, for it's rearward sails would becalm it's others, and it also cannot sail directly into the wind or anywhere near it's eye...within six points or perhaps seventy degrees is the closest it might get.

"But an airship has no water, and therefore no cutwater. This means that it always takes on complete leeway, falling away from the wind despite whatever the crew might do to stop it. For this reason, an airship has no benefit having the wind on it's quarter, stern, side, or wherever else: it would always fall away despite itself. Ordinarily, this would make an airship useless, but they're all equipped with machines known as Tonklin Pistons that propel them forward. These pistons spin great fans of air that provide the airship it's own form of propulsion, but despite this apparent simplicity, there are still rules and difficulties. For example, the pistons must overcome the speed of the wind if it were to hold it's position or even move against it. And while the pistons might push the vessel forward, they cannot stop the wind from pushing the airship along, always suffering from terrible leeway. For example, with a westerly wind, we must point our helm directly northward to reach Dragon's Keep despite it lieing Northeast of here, for the wind will blow us as much easting as ever we wanted.

"Again, I apologize for my endless prattle, but I assure you, madam, there's no way to travel quite like it. Rest assured, you'll see a few things that might astonish you both on board and over the side...images available only to the birds previously...but travelling by airship is certainly far easier to watch than it is to perform."

Tristam listened politely but swiftly became lost in the details. "I don't think I understood one word in five, Captain." Tristam chuckled. "But it is clear you are a man in love with the sky and who knows what there is to know about his ship. Both set my mind at ease." He smiles at him.

Chrisaliel listened intently, trying to take in all the detail and terminology with only passing success. There was so much more to these things that one might think.

"Oh, no, Captain," she politely objected. "It is not prattle at all, but fascinating information, and I thank you for taking the time to share it. You speak with such enthusiasm and knowledge, I can see too that it means a very great deal to you," the maiden observed, with a warm smile.

Then she turned her smile upon Tristam, in agreement with his sentiments. Chris too was encouraged by the Captain's confidence, although her butterflies subsided only slightly.

Cass scanned the entrance foyer briefly, and finding it empty, walked briskly out into the courtyard. After the almost stuffy heat of Prima's offices the cool air ruffling the hair at the back of her neck was extremely pleasant. It certainly seemed as if they were to depart extremely swiftly, speed was of the essence.

She hurried over to the group of her fellow travellers and smiled brightly at each in turn. "Master Titus" she said "Madam Constanza has sent me to speak to you, in order that I might acquire some provisions for the voyage." She paused, turned to the others and let a grin light up her face. "It appears that I am to accompany you."

Tristam grinned back at Cassandra. "Wonderful news, Madam Knellworth. Welcome to the voyage." Tristam leaned over to shake her hand in congratulations. "The more the merrier I always say." Tristam quoted. "Besides, now I'm not the newest employee anymore." He teased her.

The Elfess giggled softly at Tristam's jest, enjoying his relaxed sense of humour. It was the sort of light distraction that she needed just now, while this adventure was the idea grand diversion.

Chrisaliel smiled at the young woman, pleased to have another female along.

"Congratulations, indeed, Mistress Cassandra," she concurred. "Are you prepared to make the journey on such short notice then?" Chris asked, wondering how the young woman's family would react to such a thing. "Have you had a change to write to your family as Master Tristam has?"

She was merely making polite conversation, but her interest in her travelling companions was genuine, as Chris was outgoing by nature, and even her broken heart could not fully dampen her natural spirit.

"Provisions? But why? There will be food aplenty aboard the ship...ah! You mean...attire and whatnot..." responded Titus upon hearing Cass' approach, words that marked him as a bachelor. Turning, he glanced around the courtyard until he spotted Giovanne, the coachman. "I believe Giovanne has my purse, a convenient arrangement still. Giovanne! You must take madam Knellworth to the markets to purchase her needs...attire, I would imagine...before you deposit her at the Nashorn. You must take the chase, for the rest of us will be joining the Madrigal directly, and I should hope you will leave the carriage for us."

The Captain nodded before he addressed the small company himself. "Aye, the ship awaits us, and we're ready to join her. Would you all be pleased to board her now? We must waste no more daylight," he said, motioning towards the black carriage that remained at the ready, the same carriage that Tristam had only just arrived in a mark earlier.

Cass smiled warmly at Tristram, enjoying the feeling of companionship that already spread between the three of them. At the pretty elfess' question she felt a sharp and unexpected twist of sadness in the pit of her stomach, and an image of her real mother shot clearly into her mind, her face tear stained, and a pair of crumpled hair ribbons in her hand.

Shaking her head slightly to push the disturbing picture away, she answered, trying to stop her voice from trembling "Why no Madam Mithroldyn...I haven't yet told my parents" she spoke as if dazed, memories of her mother still plaguing her. Finally, she snapped herself out of it, and, giggling slightly said "they'd only worry about me I feel sure. I shall write to them when we reach our destination."

She turned to Master Titus with a smile of gratitude "Thank you Sir that is most kind." Without warning, she saw Hart's razor blade of a smile in the back of her mind damn these mirages, they make it hard to concentrate she thought. "I wonder, Sir, if it might also be possible for me to visit the Prodesse Dominicus before we leave? I realise that time is tight, but I must confess to being more than a little nervous, and I feel certain even a short time in the chapel to collect my thoughts and to pray would calm me enormously. You have my word that I will be at the Nashorn on time...I wouldn't dream of holding the voyage up..." she trailed off, hoping that she sounded sincere, and that her request was not considered too impetuous.

"If you wish it, we can certainly manage," responded Giovanne, already motioning Cass towards the restless chase that had seen so much use already for the day. "The Prodesse is not far from the markets, and we must move quickly, for there will be great activity in those areas shortly. We should not wish to miss the boat, as it were."

In another moment, the Giovanne and Cassandra sped off southward towards Highton, the chase clattering and gliding down the cobbled streets of the Silver District in it's urgent flight towards the markets along the Vedicus canal. Elsewhere, the somber, dark carriage quickly filled with the remainder of the Madrigal's guests before it pulled in to join the procession of sparsely-filled wagons pushing eastward into East End and the waiting Nashorn complex where the airship awaited them for it's historic flight.
